Southquarter is focused on good, single-player gaming, created by fans from gaming communities across the internet. The emphasis is on first-person games, as they tend to be the most immersive and rewarding gaming experience available. For the last several years, the site has focused solely on the Thief series of games, primarily because the community was strong, active, and that the material released was often of very high quality (and, because Thief rules, of course). Lately, the Thief scene has been slower (but not dead), and Southquarter has decided to expand it’s reach to other gaming areas and experiences as well.
Visitors to Southquarter are welcome (and encouraged) to write reviews or summaries of their favorite game mods. Just register and post. Reviews don’t have to be extremely involved or fancy – a simple paragraph (or two) that touches on high and low points is fine. Attaching a few images is a big plus.
So what defines a single-player mod? Of course, opinions on that differ from person to person, but in short, there must be a set of tasks or objectives to complete, and they should be driven by and integrated into some type of story or narrative. It doesn’t need to be Shakespeare, but it should be more involved than just attaining X number of frags in a game of deathmatch. Creating a rich, thick atmosphere is a huge plus, in addition to developing some interesting non-player characters to interact with. Other things like custom graphics, videos, sounds, music, AI, scripting, physics, etc. are always great additions and can significantly enhance the single-player experience, but in the end, they are secondary to the story.
Below are some games that have produced some great single-player mods in the past:
- Thief 1 & 2, Thief: Deadly Shadows
- System Shock 2
- Deus Ex
- Unreal 1 & 2, Unreal Tournament, UT2003/4, UT3
- Half-Life – Half-Life 2
- Doom and Quake
- Far Cry – Crysis
- Jedi Knight, Jedi Academy, Jedi Outcast
- Morrowind – Oblivion
- Clive Barker’s Undying
- Battlefield 1942 – Battlefield 2 – Battlefield 2142

I came here mainly and frequently for the files. Please keep the files and keep them updated. It was sad that the articles on the Thief series never took of. Not sure what I think of opening the site to other games, maps, mods and extensions.
